NSW Energy Savings Scheme Air Conditioning Discounts

Upgrade your air conditioning, reduce energy use and access available NSW Government incentives

If you’re thinking about installing a new air conditioner or replacing an older system, you may be eligible for an upfront discount on a qualifying energy-efficient air-conditioning system through the NSW Government’s Energy Savings Scheme (ESS).

Coastal Air Conditioning operates under the Energy Savings Scheme and can help eligible Central Coast households and businesses understand their options, determine eligibility and select an appropriate energy-efficient system.

Eligibility and discount amounts vary depending on the customer, property, existing equipment and system selected.

What is the NSW Energy Savings Scheme?

The NSW Energy Savings Scheme (ESS) is a NSW Government program designed to encourage households and businesses to reduce energy consumption by making energy-efficient equipment more affordable.
Air conditioning is one of the equipment categories covered by the scheme.
Rather than applying for a rebate after installation, eligible customers generally receive the incentive as an upfront discount included in their installation quote through a participating provider.

That means you may be able to reduce both:

Your upfront cost

through the available ESS discount.

Your ongoing energy costs

by replacing inefficient equipment with a modern, energy-efficient air-conditioning system.

Who may be eligible?

NSW households and small businesses may be eligible for an air-conditioning upgrade incentive.
Eligibility depends on factors including your existing equipment, the new system being installed and the potential energy savings created by the upgrade. Not every air conditioner or installation qualifies.

You may be worth assessing if you are:

  • replacing an older or inefficient air conditioner
  • installing eligible energy-efficient air conditioning
  • considering replacing inefficient electric heating with reverse-cycle air conditioning
  • upgrading air conditioning in a home
  • upgrading qualifying equipment in a small business.

Not sure whether you qualify?

You don’t need to work it out yourself. Coastal Air can assess your circumstances and explain the available options.

How much could I save?

The amount available isn’t the same for every installation.

NSW Government currently provides indicative examples of discounts of up to $550 for installing a new 6kW air-conditioning system and up to $560 when replacing an old air conditioner with a 6kW split system.

The actual discount can vary according to the system selected, energy efficiency, installation requirements and individual circumstances.

That’s why Coastal Air will assess the installation and provide a quote showing the applicable discount rather than promising a generic rebate amount.

The important difference:

where eligible, the ESS incentive is generally applied upfront rather than requiring you to pay the full amount and claim the money back later.

02

We assess your eligibility

We’ll determine whether your proposed installation can qualify under the Energy Savings Scheme and discuss suitable systems.
03

Choose the right system

We’ll help you select an appropriately sized, energy-efficient air conditioner suited to your home or business.
04

Complete the required documentation

Eligible ESS installations require documentation before installation, including the appropriate nomination process.
05

Your discount is applied

Where eligible, the applicable incentive is incorporated into your quote.
06

Coastal Air installs your new system

Your new energy-efficient air-conditioning system is professionally installed and your old equipment is dealt with in accordance with the scheme requirements where applicable.
This mirrors the NSW Government process, which requires the necessary paperwork to be completed before installation; the incentive cannot simply be retrospectively claimed for work already completed.

Why upgrade to energy-efficient air conditioning?

The initial discount is only part of the opportunity.

Modern reverse-cycle air conditioning can provide efficient heating and cooling from a single system, while reducing energy consumption compared with older or less efficient equipment.

NSW Government guidance says an efficient reverse-cycle system can potentially save $200–$600 per year in energy costs compared with an old system, although actual savings will naturally depend on the property, equipment and usage.

A properly selected system can provide:

Lower energy consumption

Modern high-efficiency systems can require less electricity to maintain comfortable temperatures.

Year-round comfort

Reverse-cycle systems provide both heating and cooling.

Lower running costs

Improved efficiency can reduce long-term heating and cooling costs.

Modern technology

Newer systems can provide improved controls, zoning and other efficiency features depending on the system selected.

Reduced emissions

Lower energy consumption can also reduce the environmental impact of heating and cooling.

Which types of air conditioning can qualify?

Eligibility depends on the particular system and installation.

The NSW Government’s current air-conditioning guidance covers energy-efficient reverse-cycle air-conditioning technologies, including:

  • Split systems — typically used for individual rooms or defined areas.
  • Multi-split systems — multiple indoor units connected to an outdoor unit.
  • Ducted systems — central systems designed to heat and cool larger areas or whole properties.
Recent September 2026 ESS changes also address multi-split and larger air-conditioning systems, making it particularly important that eligibility is checked against the current scheme rather than relying on older online information.

Air Conditioning ESS Frequently Asked Questions

There is an air-conditioning incentive available through the NSW Government Energy Savings Scheme. It generally operates as an upfront discount on an eligible installation rather than a rebate claimed by the customer afterwards.

NSW households and small businesses may be eligible. Eligibility depends on factors including the existing equipment, proposed new system and energy savings generated by the upgrade. Coastal Air can assess your individual circumstances.

Potentially, yes. Replacing an older air conditioner with an eligible higher-efficiency system is one of the circumstances covered by the incentive.

Potentially. NSW Government currently provides an indicative incentive for installation of a new qualifying system as well as replacement of existing equipment. Eligibility still needs to be assessed for the individual installation.

No. Not every air conditioner or installation qualifies. Eligibility depends on the particular system and installation.

There isn’t one fixed amount. NSW Government currently gives indicative examples of up to $550 for a new 6kW system and up to $560 when replacing an old air conditioner with a 6kW split system. Your actual discount depends on the equipment and installation.

Generally, no. The ESS incentive is normally provided as an upfront discount through the participating installer and reflected in the installation quote.
The required ESS paperwork must be completed before the installation begins, so customers shouldn’t assume they can retrospectively claim an incentive after completing the work.
Yes. Small businesses can potentially qualify. NSW Government also provides energy-efficiency programs for broader commercial HVAC and other business equipment upgrades. Eligibility should be assessed for the particular business and installation.
Yes. Coastal Air operates under the Energy Savings Scheme and can assess your proposed air-conditioning upgrade, explain applicable requirements and identify available options.
